How do I know my vehicle
is equipped with AFS?
Each manufacturer may choose to implement
the AFS function in a slightly different way. Here are some suggested
methods to determine if your vehicle
is equipped with an AFS system.
- Ask sales person at dealership
- Check owner’s manual
- Observe movements or changes in light pattern
during driving on curvy roads
- Lens markings (for future consideration)
- Marketing information, brochures
- Manufacturers web page
- Initialization sequence may be visible when
headlamps are turned on while vehicle is stationary. Because
of the complex mechatronics of those systems, an initialization sequence
is required which
maybe visible.
- Option summary on window sticker

Is AFS more glaring than conventional headlamp systems?
AFS should reduce glare under most driving conditions. In right-hand
turns, the headlamp beam is being directed away from the oncoming
traffic. In left-hand turns, the beams will not cross the center
line any worse
than if on a straight road.

Can I retrofit my current headlamps with AFS?
NO. These systems are designed to be integrated with the overall
vehicle system and therefore do not lend themselves for retrofit
installation.

Can I upgrade my current headlamp
system to an AFS system?
Certain car manufacturers may offer upgrades
to the conventional
headlight system. These systems are designed to be integrated
with the overall vehicle system. The installation should
only be done by
the dealership when possible.

Will
my night time driving visibility improve with these systems?
Night
time driving visibility will generally be improved under
many road and environmental conditions.
Bending light provides
additional illumination in the direction of the turn. Pedestrians,
obstacles, road features, and signs
can be detected sooner and will lead to improved reaction
time.

Why would I want AFS? (I
am a good driver, why…)
Even the best drivers can only
react to what they see. AFS enhances the field of vision
and visibility during a variety of driving situations
such as, night-time, fog, adverse weather, highway, and city
conditions. AFS systems provide more information to
allow the driver to make better
judgments while driving. The driver has a better chance to
react sooner to dynamic situations on the road.

Is AFS better than HID?
HID was designed to maximize
light on the road. AFS is designed to direct the vehicles beam pattern to provide greater
illumination for various road situations such as turns, motorway lighting,
city and adverse weather. AFS compliments both halogen and HID systems.

Can I turn AFS on and off?
Currently there are no legal
requirements for switching. The manufacturer of the vehicle may
or may not incorporate this feature.

How do I know my AFS System is legal?
Factory installed AFS headlamps
marked DOT are designed to meet all legal requirements
in the US. Verify that DOT marking is present
on the lens.
SAE J2591 is an industry standard that outlines design, installation
and validation for AFS systems. (Document available from SAE, click
